Mongolian-German expedition team did archaeological excavation for 10 years from 1999 at Kharkhorin, the capital of Mongolian Empire. The team is now doing research in several sites in Orkhon Valley. With this tour you will have the opportunity to work together with Mongolian-German expedition team. This tour is available on certain dates depending on the expedition team’s schedule.
Orkhon Valley is located in Central Mongolia in territory of Uvurkhangai and Arkhangai province. It was inscribed by UNESCO in the World Heritage List as representing evolution of nomadic pastoral traditions spanning more than two millennia in 2004. Uvurkhangai province uncludes the site of the ancient capital city of Chinggis Khan – Kharkhorin – the capital city of what was the largest Land Empire the World had ever known, either before or since.

Day 1: Ulaanbaatar

Day 2: Ulaanbaatar – Elsen Tasarkhai sand dune
The tour starts by driving to Elsen Tasarkhai. Elsen Tasarkhai is a crossing that extends about 80 km and lies between Mongol Els and Khugnu Tarma Els. It is also called small Gobi.

Day 3: Elsen Tasarkhai – Kharkhorin
Visiting Kharkhorin. The city was established in 1220. Kharkhorin was the capital of Mongolia for 140 years and the capital of the Mongol Empire for 32 years. The Erdenezuu monastery and ruin of Kharkhorin were registered by UNESCO in world heritage in 1996. Major tourist attractions included in the day tour are Erdenezuu monastery, newly built Kharkhorin museum, Penis rock and the Turtle rock. You will see here the excavation works of Mongolian-German archaeological expedition team.
Day 4: Archaeological Excavation

Day 11: Talbiun – Tuvkhun monastery
Tuvkhun monastery – on the peak of of the Undur Shireet with 2312 m high which locates in the boundary of Arkhangai and Uvurkhangai aimags. You can walk or ride horse to the peak of the mountain. It was erected by Zanabazar in 1654 the smooth grand of the south slope of steep rock with 20m high and has 14 small temples. This creation of the temple has enjoyed state protection since 1998 and was registered by UNESCO in the world heritage by grading “The most wonderful valuable object” in 1996.
Day 12: Talbiun – Orkhon Waterfall
Today we visit Orkhon waterfall one of the famous attractions of Orkhon Valley.
Day 13: Talbiun – Ulaanbaatar
Coming back to Ulaanbaatar after breakfast.
Go shopping in UB for souvenirs
In the evening we will have farewell dinner with Mongolia-Travel team while we discuss about our tour and exchange thoughts and ideas.
Spend night in hotel.
Day 14: Departure
Last day of your trip.
